A Flagging Campaign?
Contributed by Russ Vaughn Aside from Obama’s now-you-see-it-now-now-you-don’t American flag lapel pin, as World Net Daily reports, he seems to keep having other banner issues. First it was the Che Guevara flag prominently displayed at an Obama campaign office in Houston. Now it seems, the Obama campaign’s official blogger, Sam Graham-Felsen, has shown his true colors as well. |

2008.04.29 Politics and National Defense Roundup
Contributed by Bill Faith
A trip to my nearest conveniently located VA Medical Clinic ended up consuming a much bigger chunk of my day than I had any idea it would. I'm going to close this out early and try to get an early start on tomorrow's roundup. The highlight of my trip: Exchanging Welcome Homes with a gent who spotted the words "VIETNAM VET" on my cap at a Pilot truck stop on US 41 and tapped me on the shoulder to say "Glad you could make it." Compared to a lot of guys who were closer to the pointy end of the stick than I was I feel a little embarrassed to call myself a vet sometimes but incidents like that now and then make me more than satisfied with my investment in that cap and the boonie hat I wear instead on days it looks like my hearing aids might need protection from raindrops. To all the real vets I haven't met yet: Welcome home. Thank you for your service. Worth knowing about today:

Dee, Dee, Dee, Dee… Dee, Dee, Dee, Dee…
Contributed by Russ Vaughn Attempting to read myself back to sleep in the wee hours, I was brought fully awake by an exchange of dialogue on page 52 of Stephen Hunter’s spy thriller, “Havana,” published half a decade ago. Two soviet operatives tasked with the responsibility of assuring the rise to power of a talented young politician in fifties Cuba are discussing the qualities of their protégé, not known for his personal grooming habits, and sometimes referred to by his contemporaries as Greaseball. (All emphasis is mine) “Forget his odor. Concentrate on his potential. Have you heard him speak? It’s magnificent.” “I have heard some accounts. He likes long ones, or so I hear. And I hear he likes the spotlight.” “He is ruthless; he has already killed in the gangstserismo politics of the forties; he is dedicated: he believes, if in nothing else, in change. He has that thing you have, Speshnev, that most of us lack. The magnetism.” “It’s called charisma.” Copyright © 2003 by Stephen Hunter Considering the subsequent shambles their protégé, Fidel Castro, with his penchant for change, “if nothing else,” made of Cuba in the ensuing decades made the eerie parallel to our current political scene even more disturbing, enough so that I had difficulty going back to sleep. As my eyelids would begin to flutter, I’d begin hearing strains of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone soundtrack (track 11) while envisioning an America led to similar shambles by a newer charismatic leader, for the sake of change, if nothing else. When I finally did succumb to Hypnos it was with the parting thought that to Michael Moore, Sean Penn, Jane Fonda and other Castro-enamored, liberal airheads, those eerie chords could serve as both a lullaby and an election anthem. Dee, Dee, Dee, Dee… Dee, Dee, Dee, Dee… |

What's in a Name?
Contributed by Russ Vaughn In today’s New York Times, Obama, when asked about the ongoing rumors that he is in fact a Muslim, is quoted, “It frustrates me that people would even have a question about something like that, because they don’t ask the same questions of some of the other candidates…” Uh, gee, Barack, could it have anything to do with your name? Nah, it’s more likely the result of us small town Americans clinging to such foolish ideas that someone named Barack Hussein Obama, sired by a Muslim father from an extensive African clan, all of whom are practicing Muslims, a boy educated in Indonesian Islamic madrassas and a fan of America’s leading Black Muslim, Louis Farrakhan, could have any propensity to actually be a Muslim? So forgive us Barry, for our own foolish, small town propensity for clinging to totally irrational suppositions. Heck, a lot us believe Hillary Clinton was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. Where on earth do we small town fools come up with such ridiculous ideas? |

Cling to me...
Contributed by J D J. D. Pendry
I was just being a typical Bitter-American. Hating life in general and looking for someone, anyone actually, to blame for whatever real or perceived problems that I could dream up and hoping that someone would happen along with promises to fulfill all of my utopian fantasies. The main one being free everything. |

Boneheads vs. Jarheads
Contributed by Russ Vaughn TIME Magazine, that bastion of objective news reporting, where journalistic ethics are disappearing even faster than their readers (circulation rates down 17.5% in 2007 from the previous year according to Wikipedia) has trashed an American patriotic icon with its latest cover: http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=293411344350742 The cover is insulting to all American warriors but constitutes absolute sacrilege to one particular branch of American fighting men. TIME’s clueless, liberal editors may have endeared themselves to Al Gore and his Green Lemmings but they have surely incurred the wrath of a far more formidable green organization, the entire present and past United States Marine Corps, the lean, mean Green Machine. Memories of some interesting times -- The Siege of Kontum
Contributed by Bill Faith Just a small slice of a bigger picture I only saw a little bit of myself. Thank you William "1stCav" Page for the links. I spent one of the least boring times of my life at the Kontum, Viet Nam airstrip in May and June of '72, unloading ammo from American C-130s and loading it onto ARVN trucks. 1stCav spent a longer period of time, including the entire period I was there, as part of a tank killing TOW team helping keep the North Vietnamese Army away from the airstrip and the city itself. William, I thank you for that as well. I have to wonder after watching those if any of those Montagnards are some of the same ones I helped usher onto American C-130s at the airstrip. Amazing how many people you can crowd onto an airplane when they want to travel bad enough. |

Debunking DeBord
Contributed by Russ Vaughn [Editor's Note: Russ wrote this in response to this American Thinker post, which you should read first.] Matthew DeBord, of the LA Times, is a dumbass civilian who apparently has no compunction about demonstrating it for all to witness. Any serving military officer, NCO or private appearing before the Congress would wear the Class A uniform of their particular service, if for no other reason than out of respect for their civilian paymasters. From my own military experience, I would imagine that the Class A uniform is required by regulation for any such appearance. As for the General's bling, to put it in terms a shallow lightweight like DeBord might understand, there are plenty of serving sergeants and lower-ranking officers who wear far more ribbons, badges and medals than General Petraeus. To a clueless civilian like DeBord, those bits of metal and color may be nothing more than ostentatious show, but to members of the military, those decorations are a career roadmap, telling fellow service members what training one has had, where they have employed it and how well, over what period of time and whether or not their service has been exceptional, particularly in the case of medals for valor in combat. With a quick look at a military uniform, someone knowledgeable of the system can learn a great deal about the person inside. Believe me, it saves a lot of time when you want to know who you're dealing with in a first-time situation. Lastly, you are right that the name tag is required by regulations and is grounded in the common sense notion that in very large organizations where you are giving orders and getting orders on a regular basis to and from folks who are all dressed alike, sometimes under very spontaneous and chaotic conditions, it is helpful to have a prominently displayed name tag to make it clearer to everyone in the process, who gives what orders to whom. No, General Petraeus wouldn't get dinged if he didn't wear his name tag, but he does it as a common courtesy to his troops and to show he observes the regulations just as they must. Besides, to some privates, all generals look alike. Wine-sipping, sissy effetes like Matthew DeBord should stick to critiquing waiters' and sommeliers' uniforms. After Church service today, I was sitting on the back porch bitterly contemplating my miserable lot in life. I did not have the guns out, nor was I actively hating any particular group of people at the time. Well, maybe there was a little disdain for those Politician-Americans.
